Hoza was able to revise an existing product by making use of different sorts of material, thus realising a considerable lighter roll cage. Thanks to these revisions, the required functionalities remained equal. Savings on fuel and with that CO2 emissions turn out to be huge.

PostNL in the Netherlands stresses social enterprising. This awareness, and Hoza’s opinion that they actually adhere to this, was sufficient reason for us to take a thorough look at the current roll cage, which has been used for over 35 years. We are convinced that there is always room for improvement. We have investigated all features of the roll cage and focused on savings in weight, ergonomics and sustainability. We were allowed to change everything, as long as measurements and functionality were maintained. This way both the current and the improved roll cage could be used together in the logistics processes.

Hoza redesigned a number of elements. The most essential improvement was the substantial reduction in weight. By looking critically and using product innovations we were able to reduce the total weight of the roll cage by 15 kg.

This saving in weight was partly effected by using a plastic material, but alterations in the total construction also led to savings. For example, we are now using wire mesh in the side walls instead of tubes. This means less steel, resulting in a lighter and cheaper roll cage. Moreover, the roll cage is easier to handle, due to the lower weight. In addition to other ergonomic improvements, the handling of this roll cage has become much more comfortable.

Lastly, the way of folding the roll cage was adjusted. This means that in the same truck a considerable larger number of empty roll cages can be transported, which saves a lot of fuel.

We have calculated that when a company uses approximately 100,000 roll cages on an annual basis, it could potentially save 300,000 litres of fuel each year. Based on current (Dutch) fuel prices, this equates to a saving of € 350,000,-. Due to lower fuel usage, the CO2 emissions are reduced, therefore decreasing environmental impact. Green pays for itself!
