hoza case Foldable vegetable roll cage

It can be time-consuming and physically strenuous to (dis)assemble a vegetable roll cage. Hoza’s experienced product developers were able to design a foldable vegetable roll cage. By folding instead of disassembling the roll cage a lot of time can be saved.

Characteristics of the product

Customer: Fresh food wholesalers
Product: Foldable roll cage
Ergonomics: No stacking or disassembly, but folding
Sustainability: Less damages so longer lifetime, when folded more roll cages per truck, resulting in less fuel and CO2 emission

Many types of vegetable roll cages cause a physical strain for truck drivers and are time-consuming when they need to be (dis)assembled. On Hoza’s initiative a foldable roll cage has been developed, which is much easier and more pleasant to handle. Result? Less absenteeism from drivers due to illness and more stops on their route.
It is difficult to make vegetable roll cages foldable, due to their functionality. Consequently, this type of cage is usually a detachable one, consisting of a steel base and two side walls that can be taken apart. In practice, drivers do not bother to remove the sides from the base, but flip the roll cage upside down and stack it on another one to save time. However, this is a dangerous way of working for both the driver and the distribution centre staff who load and unload the cages.
Another disadvantage is that when unloading, a lot of roll cages and floors get damaged when the cages drop on the floor.

Useful solution

Hoza realised that a change in design would save the industry a lot of money. Our product engineers started a thorough investigation on how the design could be changed without making concessions to the basic requirements. They came up with the solution of a foldable roll cage, which has the same specifications as the current design in its unfolded state. However the novelty in the design comprises the methodology of folding the roll cage and creating space to slide them into each other.

Saving of time

The new way of folding is much more ergonomic and less time-consuming than breaking down the roll cages. This way of working will save the drivers at least an hour a day, resulting in more runs every day. Calculations on existing operations made clear that fewer FTEs will be required to build up the roll cages. Considering all savings on health and safety, more runs per day and fewer FTEs, an average ROI in only a couple of years will be realistic.
